My garden

How do I describe my garden? My garden is varied and colorful, a little chaotic, inhabited by many different creatures and very friendly. When I got my garden, it was more a weed field (Excuse me! I mean a wild herb meadow) with two apple trees than a garden.

The about 450 square meters big lawn and weed plantation had neither a water nor a power connection at all. There were no hut or a shelter; and no garden tools, except for a rusty shovel of old age. Oh, not to forget the wheelbarrow with holes and puncture.

I had hardly an idea how to begin, and i only knew that everything increases and prospers. However, I had very great appetite for strawberries! Especially on own. Therefore the first that I bought there strawberry plants; sort Ostara. Meanwhile the strawberries moved their place already two times, and for that they are not feeling so alone, they got some chives and garlic as partners. Between that chamomile grows and also a few marigold, and sometimes thimble and hollyhock are coming for visit. Because in my garden the strawberries and the chives have become good friends. And the best thing is that my vegetable, flowers and herbs do have a friendship.that makes them stronger against enemies, and can protect themselves mutually. Such a jumble is named mixed cultivation in garden books. And even if it seems complicated, it is the most natural, most economical and maybe also the simplest kind to cultivate an allotment. The rockery

The rockery was the second project in my garden, straight after the strawberries...

It was a pure chance that the rockery arose. In one corner of the garden were lying a large stone and pair smaller stones, to heavy to transport away. Therefore I got the idea to build a rockery. For this purpose, i put some more stones to it and filled the place between the stones with earth, debris and sand. A rockery should have place on a higher sunnily ground to prevent water staying in the rockery after rain. Suitable for planting are Sedum, Saxifrage, Geranium, Armeria or moneywort. Herbs as thyme feel also very well in the rockery, also a hardy yucca is very suitable. It is often given advice to alpine plants like the gentian, I have never yet had luck with gentians! It is presumably too pretentious and for this purpose still expensive.

Often you can read that the creating of a rockery is paired with a lot of strength and expenditure, you would need so much specific tool, and the plant selection would be also a difficult thing. And anyway you get yourself an landscaper best...

To admit, I put a lot work in it, however not really more, than if I had formed a single flower bed. My rockery did not arise either in a year. Every year I changed something at that. For this purpose another aspect becomes important: because this place is not digged up and not manured also, many small animals found a new home between the stones. In the meantime toads, small lizards and beetles often show their faces also a few case snails and some fat spiders also sat down and I hope, they all feeling well in my garden...

The pond

I got the idea to build a pond in 2001, after I have seen the pond from one of my garden neighbors. My first pond was small plastic pond from the DIY market. We had only to let in water and buy some plants and fish to live in. After a few days the water became muddy and muddier, the fish became sacrifice from a heron or a cat. At least the only thing left was the stupid plastic part, full of dirty water. So the first experiment was for nothing, but what brought me now more than ever to try it again. And this time I wanted to make it correct. We bought pond film, dug one giant hole, laid the film, planted a beautiful water lily and the new pond was almost ready. Ok, nearly...

On the lowest level the pond has approx. a deth of one meter. This is needed for the fish to survive the winter. After a few weeks our fish moved in. It took approx. two years until the plants developed and the water quality levelled out.

The most important thing is, to let things not going to seed in the pond (Foliage, fish feed residues, plant waste and so forth) and never exchange the water, neither partial. If the summer is very dry and evaporates a lot of water, best fill with stale water. But not too much at once. In fall and spring the pond is thankful for some cleaning. Too many plants must sorted out, sludge if too much also becomes removed. The cleaning action must be made, however, very cautious, because of the animals living in this habitat! In the last years many different animals moved to our pond like different frogs, colored dragonflies, salamanders and many small living beings those name I totally do not know.

Gemüsegarten

Mein Gemüsegarten ist das Bunte und das Durcheinander in meinem Garten, also dieMischkultur. Hier wachsen die Zwiebeln gemeinsam mit den Erdbeeren, und wenn noch Platz ist, kommen noch paar Salate dazu. Um noch mehr Farbe in die Gemüsebeete zu bringen, lasse ich die Kamille und die gelben Ringelblumen überall wachsen, wo sie nur Lust haben. Genaueres zur Mischkultur findet ihr hier...

Natürlich kann ich nicht alles anbauen, dafür reicht mir die Zeit nicht aus, die Anbaufläche übrigens auch nicht. So baue ich meine Lieblingsgemüse an. Jedes Jahr gibt es Bohnen und Kartoffeln, Zwiebeln und Knoblauch. Zucchini darf auch nicht fehlen, dazu das eine und andere mehr. Das wichtigste, es schmeckt alles so lecker!! Eigene Radieschen sind doch die besten, oder?

Auch in der Mischkultur muss mal gedüngt werden. Für mein Gemüse nehme ich nur Kompost oder Gründüngung. Diese Art zu düngen kostet kaum was, ist ungefährlich, man kann nicht überdosieren und ist auch wirklich gesund für Mensch, Pflanze und Tier.

Kräutergarten

Mein Kräutergarten liegt direkt am Steingarten, besser gesagt, er ist ein Teil vom Steingarten. Ich habe Oregano, Thymian, Sauerampfer, Salbei, Estragon, Zitronenmelisse, Pfefferminze, Ysop, Lavendel. Die meisten Kräuter wie Lavendel, Salbei, Thymian lassen sich sehr leicht durch Stecklinge vermehren, andere wie Oregano, Sauerampfer oder Melisse durch Aussaat oder Teilung. Manche vermehren sich sogar viel schneller als gewünscht. Oregano, Ysop und Melisse muss man unbedingt vor dem ausblühen abschneiden, sonst ist in null Komma nix der Garten voll von Oregano und Co. Aber nicht zu früh, die Hummel zum Beispiel mag Kräuterblüten besonders gerne. Erst wenn die Blüten nicht mehr für Insekten interessant sind, sollte geschnitten werden. Die Blumen

Sehr viel Zeit verbringe ich natürlich auch mit meinen Blumen. Am liebsten mag ich die Frühlingsblumen wie Schneeglöckchen, Tulpen, Narzissen und Krokusse. Vielleicht, weil der Winter wieder so lang war? Dann kommen noch die Rosen und Clematis und die allen unzähligen Sommerblumen.

Ich habe auch schon mit den Exoten wie Inkalilie versucht. Es war nichts! Viel zu teuer und wachsen wollten sie auch nicht. Es stimmt doch, dass in unserem Garten die Pflanzen am besten wachsen, die auch bei den Nachbarn gut gedeihen. Sie sind an unser Wetter gewöhnt. In meinem Garten habe ich sehr viele Blumen, die ich von Nachbarn bekommen habe und fast alle sind toll geworden. Überall pflanze ich z.B. Tagetes, auch der Knoblauch hat einen festen Platz im Blumenbeet. Manche Stauden, wie Lupinen, habe ich aus Samen gezogen, kaufen wäre schneller, aber viel teurer. Die Blumen, die sich bei uns gut fühlen, vermehren sich auch sehr schnell. Zum Beispiel Glöckchen, Schlüsselblume oder Frauenmantel (bei Frauenmantel muss mann immer unbedingt das Ausgeblühte abschneiden, sonst haben wir im nächsten Sommer tausend kleine Frauenmäntelchen!).

Schmetterlingsgarten

Nein, ich habe keinen richtigen Schmetterlingsgarten. Ich habe Ecken im Garten, die ich speziell für Schmetterlinge mit bestimmten Gewächsen bepflanzt habe. Teils waren es meine eigene Beobachtungen. Ich habe mal eine Pflanze bekommen, die heißt Schneefelberich. Im nächsten Sommer, während der Blüte habe ich darauf ganz viele Große Ochsenaugen gesehen. Mein Sommerflieder wurde auch sehr oft besucht. Auch Lauch- und Schnittlauchblüten gehören zu den Lieblingspflanzen. Eine Sache muß man jedoch beachten: die schönen Schmetterlinge, die heute unseren Garten schmücken waren im früheren Leben Raupen. Die mögen wir meistens nicht so besonders! Wehe wenn eine auf der Rose krabbelt, zack, sie wird gleich platt gemacht, besprüht und vernichtet. Ein Schmetterling weniger! Was für ein Jammer!

Ich lasse meine Raupen krabbeln. Letztens haben sie tatsächlich eine Rose abgeknabbert. Das macht aber nichts, die Rose bekommt schon neue Blätter und die Raupe hängt irgendwo in meinem Garten (das hoffe ich!) als Puppe und fliegt bald als Schmetterling in meinem Garten.

Insektenhotel

In den letzten Jahren haben wir immer weniger Insekten im Garten. Die Wespen, Wildbienen, Hummeln und Co. sind seltene Gäste geworden. Zum Teil, weil sie nicht genug zu Essen finden. All die " exotischen" und ausgefallenen Pflanzen in unseren Gärten sind nichts für sie. Auch die Nistmöglichkeiten sind weniger geworden. Eine große Rolle spielen bestimmt auch die Umweltgifte und Krankheiten, wie z.B. bei Bienen. Aus diesem Grund habe ich mich entschieden, ein Insektenhotel zu bauen. Es ist gerade fertig geworden (Oktober 2006) und noch nicht bewohnt. Ich hoffe doch, dass sich spätestens im Frühling die ersten Gäste anmelden werden.
